The Handmade Process:
This vase came from a beautiful local tree that was destroyed during a strong winter storm. I cut, cleared, and harvested the tree’s wood with my chainsaw and then prepped all of the logs for storage to prevent them from cracking. After a few months, I picked out a log, removed the bark, and turned the piece on my lathe to achieve the shape of the vase. I sealed any natural “blemishes” with wood glue, and I then set the piece aside in my solar kiln for several months so that it could fully dry and go through a slow and natural sanitizing process. After baking in the kiln, I removed the piece and turned it on my lathe for a second time to achieve its final shape. I then sanded the piece until its surface was smooth. Any “blemishes” were then reexamined and strengthened even more with final touches of wood glue. Other finishing touches included branding and sealing the piece with several layers of polyurethane.
