The Handmade Process:
This bowl came from a beautiful local tree that was destroyed during a strong winter storm. I cut, cleared, and harvested the tree’s wood with my chainsaw and then prepped all of the logs for storage to prevent them from cracking. After a few months, I picked out a log and rough cut a circular shape using my chainsaw. I then turned the piece into a large bowl on my lathe. To create a nesting set, I cored out two smaller bowls from the large bowl, so all three bowls were created from the same piece of wood. I then sealed any natural “blemishes” with waterproof food-safe wood glue, and I set all the pieces aside in my solar kiln for several months so that they could fully dry and go through a slow and natural sanitizing process. After baking in the kiln, I removed the pieces and turned them on my lathe for a second time to achieve their final shape. I then sanded the pieces until their surfaces were smooth. Any “blemishes” were then reexamined and strengthened even more with final touches of food-safe wood glue. Other finishing touches included branding, oiling, waxing, and buffing the pieces to a nice shine.
