The Handmade Process:
This goblet came from a beautiful local tree that was destroyed during a strong winter storm. I cut, cleared, and harvested the tree’s wood with my chainsaw and then prepped all of the logs for storage to prevent them from cracking. After a few months, I picked out a log, removed the bark, and turned it on my lathe to achieve the shape of a goblet. I sealed any natural “blemishes” with waterproof food-safe wood glue, and I then set the piece aside in my solar kiln for several months so that it could fully dry and go through a slow and natural sanitizing process. After baking in the kiln, I removed the piece and turned it on my lathe for a second time to achieve its final shape. I then sanded the piece until its surface was smooth. Any “blemishes” were then reexamined and strengthened even more with final touches of food-safe wood glue. Other finishing touches included branding, oiling, waxing, and buffing the piece to a nice shine.
