The Handmade Process:
This decorative desk accessory came from a beautiful local tree that was destroyed during a strong winter storm. My dad cut, cleared, and harvested the tree’s wood with his chainsaw and then prepped all of the logs for storage to prevent them from cracking. After a few months, he roughly milled some planks of wood using a chainsaw. I chose a plank, sealed any natural “blemishes” with wood glue, and set the piece aside in our solar kiln for several months so that it could fully dry and go through a slow and natural sanitizing process. After baking in the kiln, I ran the plank through a jointer and planer to flatten the surfaces. I then used a bandsaw to cut the plank into two pieces. I sketched a design onto one of the planks and used a hand rotary tool to carve out my design. I then used a router tool/table to turn the smaller plank into an open tray. I hand sanded both pieces until their surfaces were smooth and then drilled holes in both pieces and attached them with dowels and wood glue. Other finishing touches included signing and sealing the piece with several layers of polyurethane.
